As you know already, the intention setting of a ketamine infusion is very crucial for your treatments. I like to think of intention as setting the GPS coordinates prior to going on a long journey. And what you want to do at the very beginning of the infusion session is to set that intention. Ideally the intention is one or two words so that it's easy to remember. And you'll just state it to yourself as almost a mantra over and over quietly in your mind so that it can be downloaded and programmed into the brain. Let’s explore why this is so important during treatments.
The role of neuroplasticity in intention setting
There is a reason why it’s important to keep repeating this intention. This is due to ketamine causing an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). As a result, there is an increase in neurogenesis and neuroplasticity via new synaptic connections.
So if you think about it, what are these new synaptic connections forming into? This is where I believe that the intention helps create those new synaptic connections.
At a certain point during the infusion, you might be in outer space or scuba diving underwater or traveling to distant worlds, dimensions or universes. During this period, you can let go of the intention, surrender, and have the experience.
The art of letting go
In a way, it's a bit of a paradox where you set an intention yet let go of the outcome. Similar to going on a trip, you can set the GPS coordinates but things may not go the way you planned and that's okay.
We tell our patients that you don't necessarily get what you want but you always get what you need.
