Synopsis: In this blog, we explore the groundbreaking research which shows ketamine infusions are just as effective as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) for treatment-resistant depression. This large sample randomized trial found equal symptom improvement, positioning ketamine as an alternative to ECT’s memory loss risk

A Breakthrough Study on Ketamine Therapy
We’re thrilled to share insights from a groundbreaking article recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine - "Ketamine versus ECT For Non-psychotic Treatment-resistant Major Depression." This study, dated May 24, 2023, offers a compelling comparison between Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Intravenous Ketamine Therapy in treating treatment-resistant depression.
How Was The Study on Ketamine and ECT Conducted?
The study began with a significant sample size, initially including about 400 patients who were randomized. 195 patients received IV ketamine, and 170 underwent ECT. As you may know, ECT is considered the gold standard for treatment-resistant depression. It is typically used as a last resort treatment. This study sought to compare the effectiveness of these two treatments.
What Is More Effective for Depression, Ketamine or ECT?
What's fascinating about this study is that it found ketamine to be just as effective as ECT in alleviating symptoms of treatment-resistant major depression. This finding is a game-changer, especially considering memory loss is a known side effect of ECT. On the other hand, the primary side-effect associated with ketamine was dissociation, a state some describe as a non-ordinary state of consciousness, but without the memory loss linked to ECT.
Why is This Study a Turning Point for Ketamine Therapy?
This study is revolutionary and holds significant weight, given its large sample size and being published in one of the world’s most well-respected medical journals. These findings align with what we’ve observed in treating our patients at Reset Ketamine, which adds to the excitement of what ketamine infusions can do!
Embracing the Promising Results of Ketamine Therapy
In conclusion, this latest research confirms that ketamine infusions are just as effective as ECT in treating major depression resistant to other treatments. The results of this study are not only promising but also align with our personal experiences in patient treatment.
