Are Repeat Ketamine Infusions Safe for PTSD & Depression?

This blog is an adapted video transcript of the above video.

This blog explores whether repeated ketamine infusions are safe over time, plus stresses the importance of communicating with your provider about any potential side effects.

It is normal to ask whether repeated ketamine treatments are safe, especially when current antidepressants don’t work as rapidly.

Are Repeated Ketamine Treatments Safe?

One of the most common questions I receive is, "Are repeated ketamine infusions safe?" This is understandable - given depression is the leading global cause of disability and affects 1 in 5 Americans, finding effective long-term solutions is crucial. While current antidepressants take months to work and have adverse effects, ketamine offers more rapid relief. So the idea of exploring a different therapy to address treatment-resistant depression and if it is safe to repeatedly receive it is a valid question!

A study found that subjects who were given repeat ketamine infusions found a significant improvement in PTSD and depression symptoms.

What A Research Study Says About The Safety Of Repeated Ketamine Treatments

In a study titled, “Efficacy, Safety, and Durability of Repeated Ketamine Infusions for Comorbid Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Treatment-Resistant Depression” published in the National Library of Medicine, they aimed to determine whether repeated ketamine infusions would be safe on veterans with PTSD and treatment-resistant depression. The subjects were administered six ketamine infusions over a 12-day period.

It was found that there was significant improvement in PTSD and depression symptoms in these patients. No participant reported any worsening of their PTSD symptoms over the duration of the study.

While the likelihood of side effects for repeated ketamine treatments are low, it is best to work closely with your doctor throughout the therapy.

Yes, Repeat Ketamine Treatments Are Safe but…

After an initial series of infusions, patients may pursue booster treatments, perhaps every 3-8 weeks depending on symptoms. Fortunately, studies indicate the likelihood of negative effects remains low when ketamine is administered therapeutically by professionals. However, as with any medication, side effects are possible - discuss any that you experience with your provider. Most importantly, by working closely with your doctor throughout your ketamine therapy to maximize benefits and minimize risks, you can safely achieve lasting transformation.

Related Questions:

Are there any guidelines or recommendations regarding the frequency of booster ketamine treatments, and how does this relate to the overall safety of the therapy?

  • Research supports multiple ketamine infusions are needed to minimize depression symptoms and maintain antidepressant effects. In our clinic, we recommend pursuing the 6 series infusion to start, followed by boosters as needed

While the chance of negative effects are low when you receive ketamine therapyby professionals, it underscores the importance of ongoing communication with them to ensure safety and efficacy.

What are some potential side effects of ketamine therapy?

  • Ketamine therapy, like any medication, can have potential side effects such as nausea and dizziness. Please discuss any side effects you have during therapy with your ketamine specialist. Your open communication allows for timely adjustments to treatment if needed, so you can have continued safe treatments.
