Unpacking Governor Newsom's Veto on SB58

I wanted to take a moment to share about this interesting legal regulation and law that had been vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom: Senate Bill 58. This bill was passed by the majority of the California House of Representatives and the Senate. Yet, when it reached Governor Newsom's office to be either to be approved or denied. Unfortunately, this bill was denied by him.

What Concerns Did Newsom Raise?

But he did offer an intriguing reason for his decision. Newsom stated that both peer-reviewed science and powerful personal anecdotes support new opportunities to address mental health through psychedelic medicines like those addressed in this bill. Psychedelics have been proven to relieve people suffering from conditions such as depression, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and other addictive personality traits. He believes this is an exciting and promising frontier, and California will lead the space.

However, his concerns were that the bill lacked sufficient details. This included dosing, therapeutic guidelines, rules to prevent exploitation during guided treatments, and required no medical clearance prior to treatments to consider underlying psychosis. Thus, he vetoed the bill.

The Glimmer of Hope Following the Veto

What I find truly remarkable are a few aspects: First, the bill was approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate, signifying significant advancement. Secondly, Governor Newsom provided clear guidelines on what he expects for approval. In his concluding remarks, he expressed a desire for the legislation to present another bill that encompasses these therapeutic guidelines. While the veto might be disheartening, there's certainly a glimmer of hope. It signifies that changes are underway, and we can take subsequent actions to promote advancements in medical science.

Is There an Available Alternative to Psychedelics?

Fortunately, for patients in need right now, there's an available option: ketamine therapy. Ketamine infusion therapy can be incredibly transformational. While the bill's rejection might be a temporary setback, the roadmap for its acceptance is clear. With ongoing advancements, alternatives like ketamine therapy and eventually MDMA and psilocybin are emerging as powerful tools in the mental health arena, promising hope and healing to many.
