In this post, we wanted to share with you a question we’ve been asked several times:
"What is your opinion on eating/drinking before ketamine infusions?"
No Drinking or Eating For At Least 3 Hours
At our clinic, we typically recommend that someone does not eat or drink for three hours prior to their ketamine treatments. Why? Well, some of the side effects of ketamine is nausea and vomiting.
We Want To Keep You Safe
Because of these types of side effects, we want the stomach to be completely empty. If you were to experience vomiting while laying back during the infusions, we wouldn’t want any of your stomach contents to go down your airway and impair your breathing. This is called aspiration and can lead to pneumonia, difficulty with breathing, and other problems. To be on the safe side, we therefore recommend a minimum fasting period of three hours prior to any ketamine infusion treatments.
Each Ketamine Clinic Does It Differently
As you know, a lot of ketamine physicians and clinics run differently. So whatever ketamine clinic you go to, definitely ask them what their protocol is and what their recommendations are regarding abstaining from food or drink prior to the infusion.
Compared to other ketamine clinics we have a lot of preparatory and post infusion recommendations. Check out How to Prepare For And Integrate From a Ketamine Infusion to learn more about what we recommend.
If you have a question for us and would like to have it answered, send us a message and we might be able to write a blog post and make a video about it!
